Why locals love it
For the architecture buffs out there, the local government has helpfully provided the Ruta del Modernisme. Catalan modernism is not unlike it's contemporaries and shares many traits with Jugendstil and Art Nouveau. The Ruta comprises works by the most famous adherents, such as Antoni Gaudi and Lluís Domènech i Montaner.
Why you should visit it
Barcelona means Gaudi, but his contemporaries were quite interesting as well. There was a lot of money rolling around Barcelona at the time, and the local elite competed by pouring money into prestige buildings. The Ruta is a great way to get acquainted with some stunning architecture and skip the Gaudi-worship.
