Georgian people really like their food and drink, and enjoying a good meal is an essential part of their day. Our food-loving Tbilisi local Daria shares five of her favourite places where you can sample local dishes. Besides serving great Georgian fare, there’s something extra special about each of these eateries that makes them stand out.

1. 144 Stairs / OAT Gallery

The art café 144 Stairs serves a great mix of European and local food. Besides getting your tummy filled, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of Tbilisi from the café’s terrace. Once you’re done eating, you can admire the artworks exhibited inside.

2. Cafe Flowers

In addition to serving international cuisine and Georgian classics, Cafe Flowers functions as a florist. While dining, you’ll be surrounded by a beautiful garden of blossoms. This place also offers amazing views over Narikala, Rike Park, the Dancing Fountains and the TV Tower. Try to book one of the tables with a view – they’re usually all taken.

3. Cafe Gabriadze

This unique café was established by the famous Georgian screenwriter, painter, sculptor and puppeteer Rezo Gabriadze. Though the food is delicious, the interior is extraordinary and you can end up spending most of your time admiring your surroundings instead of eating. Note that it’s not easy to get a table here!

4. Maspindzelo

Maspindzelo means “host” in Georgian, and the atmosphere here really is hospitable. They take pride in serving truly authentic local food made according to cherished old recipes. Be bold and try some unfamiliar dishes! There’s also a friendly violinist in the restaurant who’ll try to play something from your home country if he figures out where you’re from.

5. Sofia Melnikova Douqan

Although this restaurant is located off the beaten track, it’s always packed with people as it has a cosy atmosphere and serves great food. The prices are a bit above average, but the experience is more than worth it. There’s a beautiful courtyard surrounded by hanging grape vines, making you feel as if you’re miles away from the capital. This place is also cat friendly, so in nice weather you can see cute cats roaming around.
