You probably already know that Montreal is one of Canada’s most vibrant cities, but did you know that it’s possible to enjoy yourself there without spending a dime? Our local Sofia has shared 10 fantastic things to do and see for free in her beloved hometown.
From downtown to the Plateau and Mile End, discovering Montreal by foot is a great way to see the city in all its splendour. In summer, the streets come alive with outdoor shops, events and pedestrian-only zones. If you love snow, do like the Canadians do and courageously venture out to admire the winter wonderland.
Are you a fan of street art? Boulevard Saint-Laurent resembles an open-air urban art gallery, filled with stunning pieces and murals. Some are even authorised by the city (MURAL Festival happens here each summer and is where you can catch artists creating their works).

Yearning to see Europe but North America-bound? Pay a visit to the Old Port. With its enchanting cobblestones, architecture and horse-drawn carriages, there’s nothing like a trip to Old Montreal to awaken your inner traveller. In summer, the Clock Tower Beach provides optimal views of the Saint-Lawrence River and of the fireworks.

If you want to see the city from up high, Mount Royal’s observatory is the place to do so. Take advantage of the vast greenery by walking on the paths around Beaver Lake, having a picnic in the park or ice skating in winter.

Other than brunch, our Sundays are reserved for the Tam-Tams. This communal event, which takes place at Mount Royal Park, attracts families and hippies alike. Don’t know how to play a tam tam? No worries. Simply listen to the music and dance like no one’s watching, or set out a blanket on the grass and enjoy the view.

Montreal is a festival city. Rain (read: snow storms) or shine, indoors or outdoors, our city is filled with events all year round – and most are free of cost. Be sure to check out the Just For Laughs Festival, Montreal en Lumière, the Pride Festival, the Jazz Festival and les FrancoFolies, the world’s largest French-speaking music festival.

If you’re on social media, look out for restaurants and cafés giving away food. Some make it a yearly event, while others are simply celebrating a milestone. Local establishments that have previously handed out free stuff include Burger Bar Crescent, Les Glaceurs, David’s Tea, Second Cup, Yeh!, Pizzeria Gema and Léché Desserts.

Want more free food? Visiting our two most popular markets is a beautiful way to spend the afternoon. It’s also a great opportunity to sample some local goods, including maple syrup, fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses from Quebec.

Several museums offer free entry on certain days, while others have no fee for their permanent collections: the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the McCord Museum, the Redpath Museum and the Cinémathèque Québécoise, among others. Montreal Museums Day also takes place each spring.

Montrealers love their parks, which is why we host plenty of gatherings in green spaces. Attend organised events like Movies in the Park, Shakespeare in the Park or Yoga in the Park.
