Film Theater not a Cinema

Uránia National Film Theater

Why locals love it

The big ceremonial hall has 425 seats in two stories, huge mirrors in the sides, and gilded ceiling with a huge chandelier giving you a feeling you are rather in a Broadway Theatre than in a cinema. Before Multiplexes appeared in Hungary in the second half of the ’90-s Uránia was always packed.

Why you should visit it

Going to a cinema is probably not on the top of your to do list when visiting a new city. But what about going to a „movie theatre”? The Uránia National Movie Theatre was originally built to be a Music Hall in the last decade of the XIX. Century, but after a couple of years it transformed into a cinema maintaining its regal looks.

Special tip

After the film you can grab a beer in the bar on the first floor or if you prefer, have a chai in the basement in the Indian cafe.
