The city of Caracas is a valley located 900m above the sea level. The city is surrounded by the beautiful mountain El Ávila, also known as Warairarepano in indigenous language (meaning Sierra Firme- Firm Mountain). This mountain is very popular for its challenging tracks for those looking for some training but also suitable for less athletic or just fun searching visitors. The option of using the modern cable car system “Warairarepano” can always take you 2100 meters up from the city to the top of the mountain.
The way up takes around 20 minutes and allows you to take a look at the mountain, the city and even the sea while being among clouds yourself! Originally this cable car system connected the city to the sea with two routes up and down from each side of the mountain. Nowadays only the side connecting the city to the mountain is opened.
The best time to take the ride is during the sunset- beautiful colors of the sky are visible and the illuminated city is just a wonderful picture. The price for going up and down should be affordable for everyone.
Once on top there are different options, like a small trip on a 4W to the next door town Galipan where you can taste the fabulous and very popular sandwich of pernil (roasted pork).
Another option is to take a very romantic 500 m walk to the very top on the beautiful path with the European style fog lights. At the end you will be able to take a look at the Hotel Humbolt- an antique tower from the 50’s that is kept as a museum and that is visible from all over the city! While walking, do not forget to eat some strawberries/peaches and cream! And for those with a larger budget there is a very fancy fondue restaurant “Avila Fondue” ready to serve you, and even a small ice skating rink for the kids.
