Why locals love it?
It's a lovely place to go to get out of the city - even though it's just ten minutes from the centre. Really romantic, no matter the season, but in winter time you really have to rug up. The wind - like the sea - is truly icy.
Why you should visit it
What remains of this "Finnish fortress" is accessible by public ferry from Kauppatori (the market square). This UNESCO World Heritage Site, built in the 1700's as Finland (and Sweden's) easternmost defences, is now a beautiful and eerie spot for a windswept picnic.
The museum on the island will tell you about the fascinating history and present day role of these islands.
