Why locals love it
Amsterdam has a zoo exactly in the center of the city. The name Artis is short for 'Nature is the teacher of art' in Latin. And that is one thing you will notice inside. The zoo has a lot to offer for kids.

Why you should visit it
Artis opened its doors in 1838 and is the oldest zoo in The Netherlands. It is sometimes criticized for being too small (not the cages, but the zoo itself). And yes, it is not very big, but instead of giving the animals little space, in Artis the humans get a little less space.
Special tip
Unfortunately (unlike some tourist maps show) Artis is not included with the Museumkaart.
