Why locals love it

On the square called 'Spui' there is a heavy wooden door that you would think leads to a private area. And it kind of does. 'Begijnhof' is the only inner court in Amsterdam which was founded in the Middle Ages.

Why you should visit it

If you are tired off the crowded centre - or just feeling cultural, open this door and find a tiny oasis of peace and history.

Special tip

Don't make too much noise, because there are actually still people living there. They would appreciate it.

Start whispering as soon as you walk through the stone arches, or better be quiet in amazement. You’ll forget you are in the centre of a bustling city. Find a beautiful little chapel surrounded by gardens and living quarters (nunnery). People actually stil live here so please be respectful.

A little slice of peace in a hectic area of town. Don't ruin it for others though. It is a private courtyard. Please stay silent!
