A lot of restaurants in Amsterdam have started to use more and more locally grown ingredients and serve ecological/organic food. (Hooray!) Next to this there is a big use of second hand furniture.
The city offers a lot of vibrant, original and responsible places to eat, from snackbars til vegan restaurants. So please promise us to not fall for that 5-Euro-Pizza or the steakhouse.

Going to Noorderlicht equals a little holiday with great food at fair prices and guaranteed cosines. You will never see a place like this. Built from mainly recycled material it might look like a mess from outside, but once you're inside it all makes sense.

This rather unknown place is great for everyone searching for food. What I really enjoy about it is that there are also shops selling local stuff and that there are frequent events. Go there for lunch coffee shopping or just to read a book in peace.

Hanneke's Boom has a great view on the centre from a unique side. If you want to get in touch with locals in their 20's and 30's, this is your place. Good prices and okay food for lunch and dinner. Service isn't the greatest, but the variety of events compensate. Vinyl evenings, Jazz & Blues, DJ's, 60's & 70's and lately even a curling event.

You won't find many tourists here, simply because it is a bit tricky to find Roest. But the journey here pays off immediately when you walk in. Cosy fire place, old cinema seats, second hand Chesterfield couches, cool art and funny details in the interior. It seems innocent, but at night it can get quite naughty.

My friends/familymembers that come to visit me usually want to see the regular stuff: Damsquare, Museumsquare, Red Ligth District etc. Those areas are worth a visit, but they don't represent what it's like to live in this city. Want to see Amsterdam like a local? Take a stroll through the Plantage and visit some amazing spots: my friends loved it!

A walk on this market goes like this: A typical Dutch flower stand next to one with Indian spices. One further there is Vietnamese food and his neighbor sells Italian snacks. The man that sells Belgian fries opposite to him waves at the kids of his Surinam neighbor. All these cultures move in great harmony for many years now.
