When people say 'maritime history', my curiosity isn't immediately aroused. With Amsterdam though, it's a different story. The ships that came in and out of the city -especially in the 17th century – meant booming business. Rush hour as it is known today on highways, did exist back then too: on the water! Amazing exhibitions tell you the stories.

If you like to get a grip on Amsterdam's history during the Golden Century, this museum is a must-do. All the activities that accompanied the shipping trade had an immense impact on the lives of Amsterdam people. Lots of them became seamen, and got caught up in crazy adventures – documented in multiple expositions throughout this beautiful museum.
Have a cup of coffee and a freshly baked apple-pie (with fresh whipped cream!) in the museum-café after strolling through the exhibitions/collection.
