If you look at the building from the outside, you would never think that it fits 4 cinema's, a 1200m2 exposition room, a filmlab and the biggest film library of The Netherlands. You should definitely visit EYE if you are a movie freak, but also the cinemas have massive leg and arm space and the quality of the sound.. Man.

My friends/familymembers that come to visit me usually want to see the regular stuff: Damsquare, Museumsquare, Red Ligth District etc. Those areas are worth a visit, but they don't represent what it's like to live in this city. Want to see Amsterdam like a local? Take a stroll through the Plantage and visit some amazing spots: my friends loved it!

Some numbers about what you'll find behind the 300 year old gates: The garden part has 8000 sorts of plants from all continents. The greenhouses have over 4000 different sorts. A big part of the collection is in Amsterdam thanks to the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Besides getting into history and nature, Hortus is also great for a chill session.

Because of their co-operation with the Amsterdam Museum, the 'Portrait Gallery' exhibition can be visited. You can spy the 'brothers and sisters' of Rembrandt's famous Nightwatch on 30 group portraits.

The Amsterdam School is "the other" architectural style you might associate with this city (the first being the typical Dutch Canal house style). There are a few examples dotted through the city, namely Het Schip (the ship) and Sheepvaarthuis, though this is the most centrally located and you can enjoy a good film and Heineken at the same time!

Artis opened its doors in 1838 and is the oldest zoo in The Netherlands. It is sometimes criticized for being too small (not the cages, but the zoo itself). And yes, it is not very big, but instead of giving the animals little space, in Artis the humans get a little less space.

If you like to get a grip on Amsterdam's history during the Golden Century, this museum is a must-do. All the activities that accompanied the shipping trade had an immense impact on the lives of Amsterdam people. Lots of them became seamen, and got caught up in crazy adventures – documented in multiple expositions throughout this beautiful museum.
