A beautiful neoclassical house turned into a favourite restaurant of locals, Ama Laxei used to be a run-down taverna until its rebirth in 2014. Athenians love it on a hot night, as it feels like you have escaped to the country side for a tiny bit. The garden occupies literally a whole apartment block, with plenty of greenery and urban aesthetics.
The menu is that of a traditional local tavern, but the decor is very modern and the garden very enticing to spend hours over a glass of wine. With affordable prices and a mainly local crowd, Ama Laxei has nothing to do with the touristic tavernas you can find in Plaka. Well located, just a 3-euro taxi ride from most places in central Athens.
The Ama Laxei salad is really good. Opt for the main dishes instead of starters as they are slightly over-priced.
