Which island to go to after Athens?

(23 answers)
By Serene Traveller February 20, 2018

Hi! I am a solo female traveler planning to visit Greece in the 1st week of April after spendig 3 days in Istanbul. I am thinking of visiting Athens first for 3 days, followed by Santorini for 2 days and am hoping to squeeze in 1 more island. Do you have any recommendations? I'm not much of a beach person as I don't enjoy tanning or water sports but I do love nature and scenery!

Would love your advice! websites have told me that Corfu and Crete are some options for early April. Thoughts?

I would agree with most other recommendations. I would also add Serifos to the equation. It depends on a few parameters though. How are you going to Santorini, do you have a full 24hr stay etc.

Hi Nikos! I was actually thinking of doing a day trip to Santorini instead to see the main sights before going back to Athens!
Hi Serene,
Since you prefer the nature scenery I recommend Hydra - the only place that all kind of wheel is not allowed. Only on foot and donkeys. It is small and pretty and close to Athens.
Enjoy!

Thanks Stella! I'll look Hydra up! I'm planning 3/4 days in Athens followed by 3 days in Santorini then Hydra if I can squeeze in enough time. So many islands so little time!

Thanks! I will defintely visit Santorini though now my only problem is getting around. I don't really drive and am not sure whether I'd be able to walk all over the island by myself! I will probably spend about 3 days in Santorini :)

You can use the local buses there ,its not very difficult to get around

Depends on how many days you have left to visit this 1 more island. It will be really tight to go to Corfu for example-unless you catch a flight. But a beautiful;yet big island.
Crete is a great option with lots to explore although a huge island. If you decide Crete, i advise to visit Chania

Rodos is also a good choise, again a big island that you can find things to explore.

Personally i prefer smaller islands, the problem there is how much time you have to commute (as most islands dont have airports), and the fact that April time is not a very busy period which can be good but at the same time could mean not everything is open yet.
Islands i would recommend for your preferences would be Naxos, Samos, the very famous for how relaxed everything amd remote island of Ikaria.

Well... i can carry on telling you hundreds of places.

Thanks Petros. So many places so little time! I will definetely go to Santorini (and skip Mykonos) for about 3 days after Athens - hopefully getting around the island is easy for me as I don't really drive. I'm trying to plan out the schedule so let's see how many days I can squeeze an island in before deciding!

Hi Alexandra, I think you're right! Hydra might be a good alternative. I'll work out the flight dates and timings and then see if I can put Hydra in - otherwise I'll just relax in Athens and Santorini and return to Greece for island-hopping!

Actually I love Aigina for one day trip..easily walking around a lot and nice places for coffee and traditional sweets ,tavernas with fresh fish ,reasonable prices
Mykonos is easy to get to from Santorini and it's a pretty unique place, though more "beachy"...you might want to consider spending at least part of the day in Delos (easy day trip from Mykonos).

Alternatively, you might want to visit one of the islands near Athens, like Hydra, which have a different feel to the Cyclades.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Maria! Santorini is definetely in after Athens, though I'm just a tiny worried about transportation as I don't drive much. Hydra sounds like it'll be a good option!

Santorini has pretty decent local transport so you should be OK, and a lot of what's worth seeing, you'll be seeing on foot anyway. Hope you enjoy your time here!

Depends on your budget and if you are willing to rent a car.
For smaller islands I would recommend Serifos, Folegandros,Kimolos in western Cyclades.
Crete is sure beautiful but you definitely need a car to see everything.
A quick getaway from Athens is Agkistri Island (daily trips from Piraeus).
I tried to avoid recommending very touristic islands, such as Mykonos and Santorini.Hope you enjoy :)

Okay, my question would be how to make the most of Poros and Hydra in a non-touristy way? We'll have 1-2 days in each.

If you're going to Santorini, you might want to try Mykonos (party!) or Paros (relax!). They are both very close - no more than an hour or two away. Corfu is on the other side of Greece (towards Italy) and will take you at least a day (if not two) to get there but it's very nice. Crete is lovely but several hours away by fast jet. Enjoy.

you will be visiting on Easter time, Santoirni will be wonderful, transportation in deed is very easy... try to get to 3rd island by what is the best boat route that takes you to Athens with a stop to the island...then you don't have to go back n forth in athens....did this last year, and it worked! we did Santorini, milos, kimolos, they were greatly connected ... try this option maybe!

Dear Serene,

Hydra which is already mentioned by Stella is a beautiful island, close to Athens easy accessible from Piraeus port, an only pedestrian and donkey island, where you will definitely enjoy 2-3 beautiful days, walking, exploring, visiting the National Historical Museum and check this one : http://www.hydraislandgreece.com/portfolio/christinas-stone-house-2-br-hydra-villa-rental/ for your stay, beautiful and quiet two minutes from the port, Christina is a really sweet lady ( famous ballerina ).

Spetses is another more or less similar island, close and small island, different character, beautiful as well.

If i may...don't squeeze another one, enjoy the one you will be and come again and you should definitely try Tinos island, not so famous and known but simply breathtaking nature and more...a big island and in case you will choose to go some time, let me know and i will provide you with several tips.

Crete is a unique island, but then again every one is, choose Chania simply magic from every aspect and taste, a car will be a wise choice here...and in Tinos as well.

Corfu is nice, but for some reason not my favourite island, well taste is such a personal issue.

Enjoy everywhere you go, Greece is magical*****

Kind regards,
Maria

Maria, We are going to Greece in July for 10 days. (1 day in Athens) We are a family of 4 adults and never have been to Greece before. I'd love to see one island and do day trips from there, or possibly spit the trip in two places but I have no idea where. We love being in the sea, and some hiking and have access to a local restaurant or two.. We don't need night life but also don't want the wilderness. I I don't want Mykonos and hesitate about Santorini but I just don't know Our Greek neighbor recommended Zakinthos and Lefkada, others Crete, Hydra and Santorini. We fly in and out of Athens. I'd appreciate any input!
Hi Jan, Happy New Year 2019!

So forget Mykonos, or Santorini. Kefalonia or Cephalonia one of the Ionian islands would be a great choice for your taste, you could check this link.

https://www.discovergreece.com/en/greek-islands/ionian/kefalonia

Another choice would be small islands near Athens where you could stay on Spetses for example and visit Hydra, Poros, Aegina

http://www.greece-is.com/5-reasons-visit-spetses/

https://www.discovergreece.com/en/greek-islands/spetses

And Crete is not just an island, is a love affair just go to Chania and you might as well stay there for
ever.
My friend's house built in 1908 form her great grand father...

Zakinthos and Lefkada are beautiful as well, but i haven't been yet in order to make suggestions.

I wish you a great vacation, Greece is magical!!

Kind regards,
Maria

I see you'll be here at 5-6-7/04. These dates is the Greek Easter. So it would be a nice idea to visit Corfu. It's really nice. You'll have a taste here... https://youtu.be/TZrUtrtULaA

Hello Serene,

You should know that this year the first week of April is the week before Easter (8th of April is Easter), when many locals are on holidays, so islands can get overcrowded and expensive.
If u have made up your mind about Santorini, and you have 2 days left more or less, then I would recommend a small island near Athens, as previously mentioned, such as Hydra, Spetses (but it gets so overcrowded in Easter, so maybe you go before santorini), Agistri.
Corfu and Crete are big islands, I believe you will not have the time to see them, although they are very traditional in Easter period.
Early April is kind of cold for the beach and swimming anyway, so you not being a beach person, won't be a problem!

Corfu ans Crete are far away from Santorini and Athens too. If you would like to squeeze an island near Santorini, you'd better choose one that it has a ferry connection with Santorini such as Mykonos, Ios or even Naxos. If you'd like to squeeze an island near Pireaus (the port of Athens) you could choose Hydra or Spetses. They are both small villages where cars are forbidden and you can enjoy trekking and relaxing to a picturesque environment.

You can visit Ios which is pretty close to Santorini. If you want to go to Crete you should know that it is a big island so you need more days to explore it. It depends on how many days you are planning to stay. :)
