Athens Street Art & Culture Walking Tour

Athens. A street art mecca and a veritable playground for artists from all around the world. The word “graffiti” itself derives from a Greek word! Join us on a journey through non-touristic, local neighbourhoods to see the very best of the city’s street art.
Duration 3 hours
Private tour available in English
Group tour pricing from 200 EUR per group
We met with Sofia, our guide (and also a street artist) at Gazi metro station. Anna, one of the co-founders also joined us in order to make sure that everything was perfect for our private street art tour. Sofia showed us places that only locals know and explained why street art is so famous nowadays in Greece. We also made a coffee stop at a very nice square downtown! The tour was great, we took many photos as souvenirs and explored Athens in a very alternative and local way.

Highlights

Get to know the Athens street art scene with a local street artist

Enjoy a private walking tour through the city’s most alternative and non-touristic neighbourhoods

Admire amazing murals and paintings by INO, Sonke and other well-known street artists

Understand how street art is used to make political and social statements

Description

During our alternative street art tour you’ll learn about the history and origins of this global underground phenomenon and discover the secret codes of street artists.

Your guide, a street artist themselves, will tell you about the different styles, techniques and terminology: from stencils, paste-ups, throw-ups and bombings to tags, pieces, murals, installations and wild-style graffiti!

Together you’ll explore small streets in up-and-coming neighbourhoods such as Metaxourgheio, and discuss the reasons why street art has flourished on its walls.

This tour, in particular, focuses on the social and political aspects of the Greek street art scene. What political statements are the artists making and why? How has the economic crisis affected how people express themselves on the streets of the capital?

Artworks rapidly change in the streets of Athens, essentially providing an outdoor, large contemporary art gallery- if you know where to look!
