Why locals love it

Maiden Tower is a symbol of Baku. This is a unique 8-floor structure with majestic 4-5 meter thick walls built on a rocky promontory overlooking the Caspian Sea. Maiden Tower has been included into UNESCO’s World Heritage List. There is an amazing view to the city and the Caspian Sea from the top of the Tower.

Why you should visit it

Only by visiting Maiden Tower you can be sure that you have been in Baku. It operates as museum as well. The tower’s unusual shape which is unique in the East testifies to the archaic nature of the building. Some researchers suggest that the tower used to be a chapel for fire-worshipers and refer its construction to the VIII-VII centuries BC.

The Maiden Tower (Azerbaijani: Qız Qalası) is a 12th-century monument in the Old City, Baku, Azerbaijan. Along with the Shirvanshahs' Palace, dated to the 15th century, it forms a group of historic monuments listed in 2001 under the UNESCO World Heritage List of Historical Monuments as cultural property, Category III. It is one of Azerbaijan's most distinctive national emblems, and is thus featured on Azeri currency notes and official letterheads.
