Rejuvenating the rejected

Why locals love it

You'd forgive the locals that they might be a bit claustrophobic, but the "Catalan Manchester", as Poblenou was known during the industrial boom, is being torn down, bit by bit. A chunk of the southern part became the Vila Olimpica; now, from the western bit at Diagonal, 22@ is the next project to kick some life into a run-down neighbourhood.

Why you should visit it

200 hectares of space has been designated for the 22@-project, which is an attempt to attract knowledge-heavy industries to Barcelona. The area has been split into different zones, to accomodate different industries. Go here to see modern architecture at both its finest and worst.

Special tip

The contrast between new high-rises and old houses and factories make for an interesting walkabout. Start at metro Glories and head towards the beach.
