Getting out of the city is easy - just get on the RENFE commuter trains, which follow the coast towards both north and south. The coastal towns offer a different, more tranquil atmosphere - even if mass tourism follows closely in it's wake. To the north, the Costa Brava beckons - this beautiful area was one of the first areas of Catalunya to experience charter-tourism from the north. To the south, you can go along the Costa Dorada. Head inlands to Dali's birthplace Figueres, where he created a theater-museum. Or take the bus to Girona to have a more human-sized experience of Catalunya.
