This trip was a delight. My wife, my daughter and I were the only ones on this tour on a Tuesday in early April. We all had a very good time and recommend it.
Victor was our guide. While he drove us, Victor told us a lot about Dali’s life. As a result, in addition to learning about Dali the artist, we also learned about Dali the man.
I break the trip into three parts.
First, we drove from Barcelona to the Dali House in Port Lligat. You need to make reservations in advance and you have to get there on time. At the house, Victor was permitted to take the three of us through the Dali house by ourselves. So we basically had a private tour. Victor gave us a lot of insight into Dali and Gala. We enjoyed the house, the echo room, and the gorgeous view of the sea. Victor gave us time to explore the garden on our own, and that was very nice.
Second we drove to Cadaques and ate lunch at Casa Nun. We sat outside by the water. For lunch we had pumpkin and carrot cream soup, house wine, grilled cod and salmon, dessert and espresso. The food was excellent. Because it was such a warm, sunny day, Victor gave us some time to sit by the beach and walk around town. We were very happy with our lunch and found Cadaques to be a pretty town.
After lunch, we drove to the Dali Teatre Museum in Figueres. The museum, which was designed by Dali, was worth visiting. The art was well displayed.
Even though this is an expensive tour, you should keep in mind that the price includes tickets to both museums and lunch. Also, I often rent a car when we travel. I’m glad that I didn’t drive, because once you get off the main road, the drive to and from Port Lligat and Cadaques is difficult. It is hilly, the roads are winding, and you have to watch out for bicycles and slow traffic. By not driving, I was able to appreciate the spectacular views. Also, parking in all three towns is clearly a pain, and by not driving, I didn’t have to deal with that.

Join us on a journey into the life of the late surrealist painter Salvador Dalí – one of the world’s greatest and most peculiar artists.
The tour begins with a 1.5-hour drive north to the town of Figueres – Dalí’s birthplace. The town’s most famous landmark, a museum established by Dalí in the 1970s, houses a huge collection of his works. You’ll have 1.5–2 hours to explore the museum and the surrounding old quarter before we head to the stunning whitewashed fishing village of Cadaqués for the afternoon. The final part of the drive to the village will be quite slow due to the winding mountain and coastal roads.
As it’s located on the French border and somewhat difficult to reach from the Spanish side, Cadaqués is frequented mostly be French vacationers and artists. This was the place where Dalí spent most of his adult life, and it’s still full of tiny art galleries, boutiques, interesting cafés and restaurants. Here, you can wander along the narrow cobblestone streets with their colourful doors, flowers and incredible views of the Mediterranean.
After stopping at one of our favourite local restaurants for a traditional Catalan lunch, we’ll drive 10 minutes north to Portlligat, where the Casa Museu Dalí (Dalí Museum-House) is located. You’ll have around 45 minutes to explore the museum on your own. We’ll then drive north to Cap de Creus for magnificent views of the Mediterranean, and then begin the drive back to Barcelona, arriving around 7–8 pm.
NB: Your guide won’t accompany you inside the Figueres museum and there are no audio guides available. Why? Dalí said there are two kinds of visitors: those who don’t need a description and those who aren’t worth a description. His museum, his rules!
