The tour showed a different view of the Spanish coast - more rugged, less touristy. It also showed us a medieval village which was very different to the ones we has seen in southern Spain. Small group concept was great. Fabulous lunch.

Description

This tour begins with a 1.5hr drive to the whitewashed coastal village of Calella de Palafrugell. We’ll explore this tiny fishing village, and enjoy the beach and boardwalk. We'll then walk along a picturesque path to the village of Llafranc before driving a few kilometres inland to the charming village of Pals, full of stone houses and cobblestone streets, plus it’s home to the 10th-century Church of Sant Pere. You’ll love exploring the quiet streets and taking in the beauty and serenity of this gorgeous village.

The next stop on the tour is Girona, featuring a stunningly beautiful old quarter, an incredible cathedral and the outstanding Arab Baths. It’s full of winding cobblestone streets, pedestrian bridges, colorful riverfront houses and buildings, great shops and charming cafés and restaurants. We’ll take a stroll along the top of the ancient Roman wall that still surrounds part of the city and wander through the peaceful gardens inside the towers at either end. After a great lunch at one of our favorite restaurants and a fascinating 1.5-hour tour of the old quarter, you’ll have some time to enjoy a drink at one of the local cafés before we head back to Barcelona.

There were 7 of us plus our driver/guide John. We met at the central post office near the Colon monument and were on our way in a modern minivan. Before Girona we stopped at a couple of lovely beachfront towns and did a mini walk. We also stopped at a typical "stone" town where the buildings were built by local rock from a local quarry. They had some lovely shops there. We also saw a burial site of a Visigoth ( the Visigoths were branches of the nomadic tribes of Germanic peoples). Our tour of Girona was wonderful. We stopped at the small Jewish Museum ( at one time there were 6,000 Jewish residents in the city). They had medieval tombstones on display that were from a local cemetery. The highlight though was the awesome cathedral. It was huge and awesome. John, our guide was fantastic. He was friendly, laid back and very knowledgeable. A full day and a very enjoyable with John and Spanish Trails. Would definitely use them again when I return to Barcelona!!
Best day of our vacation!
