Why locals love it

The Berlin Wall Memorial is the central memorial site of the German division. It was built in a site where many people fled from the East to the West side of Berlin during the Cold War or died trying so. It is also the place where the division of Germany was peacefully overcome in 1989.

Why you should visit it

This memorial is a remarkable place to feel the atmosphere of the Cold War. The impressive documentary centre close by is definitely worth a visit for those who are interested in the consequences of the building of the wall for the city's population and its overcoming.

Special tip

Climb the viewing platform for an impressive view of the former border strip and remains of the border fortifications along Bernauer Strasse.

Some great details about everyday life around the wall, as well as the history. Seeing it in person puts it into perspective, first Id heard about the Church of reunufucation as well.

This was a great education to my kids and me of what East Germany did to keep people in. It made a big impression

It was powerful to see the recreation of the strip between the East and West German sides of the wall. It's much larger than I had imagined.
