From Michelin-Star rated restaurants to the place where the Döner Kebab allegedly was invented - Berlin has it all. Even among Berliners it's quite common to eat out: You'll be surprised how affordable high quality meals can be. Don't go looking for typical German food too much, as here we prefer any mediterranean and middle eastern versions of street food (read: döner & falafel) or experiment with vegetarian and vegan versions of old classics or new inventions.
The sugarcoated donut-like pastry with marmelade filling, which in other parts of the world goes around as "Berliner" - is sold in local bakeries as "Pfannkuchen" (pancake).
The most famous local Berlin dish is "Currywust" a fried sausage drenched in ketchup and spiced with curry; usually ordered with fries.
Honesty, Berlin's food is famous for lots of things, forget Currywurst. YOu can find fantastic Asien, including Vietnamese and Korean, food as well as great Burgers, lots of gluten free and vegan stuff and numerous international fusion cousine (African, Japanese, Turkish, etc.)
Most places are good and you cannot go wrong often. There are many choices and people in Berlin love going out to eat, meet and drink. Feel welcome!
