Description
Your expert guide will take you to the Berlin Wall Memorial and show you exactly where the Wall once stood, tell you how it was built, and explain how the ‘death strip’ stopped East Berliners escaping to the West. You’ll hear the stories of those who lost their lives, learn how the Wall was erected overnight, and find out how some people managed to escape to West Berlin.
You’ll then journey further into East Berlin, passing the monumental TV Tower and arriving at Karl-Marx-Allee – Europe’s last grand boulevard. This impressive showcase of communism was a monument to Stalin until all reference to the Man of Steel was removed without a word from East Germany’s communist leaders.
Next, you’ll visit the headquarters of the terrifying institution that defined life in East Germany – the secret police, or Stasi. The Stasi controlled all information in the East;, their increasing paranoia resulting in neighbours spying on neighbours, not to mention the common sudden “disappearances” that were part of East German life.
The tour ends at the Bösebrücke, where East German protestors made it through the Wall on November 9, 1989, bringing an end to more than 40 years of divided Germany.
