Modern Berlin: The New Capital Bike Tour

Contemporary Berlin has earned a reputation as a vibrant bastion of counterculture, progressive thought and creative spirit. While teeming with “staycationers”, street art and non-conformists, it juggles with gentrification, a real estate boom and even a high-tech boom.
Duration 5 hours
Private tour pricing from 28 EUR per person
Group tour available in English
Excellent view behind the scenes led by personable and knowledgeable Alex who showed us the good places to go and gave an entertaining and insightful view of post-wall Berlin. Just a small group of 6. 5 hours easy cycling included some of the most exciting street art, buildings, lively neighbourhoods etc. Cycling along the runway at Templehof Airport was a quirky extra. We had originally thought of doing the Segway Tour but after doing this instead we were glad we had left our driving licences at home. Thanks Alex!

Description

Some of the topics covered on this tour include:

Colliding ambitions: For some, bare post-Cold War areas mean appealing public spaces, while for others this land represents unique investment opportunities.

Urban renewal: The former Tempelhof Airport and reclaimed "no man’s land" are two impressive examples of Berlin’s continuous, almost organic, development that few other cities can rival.

"Multi-kulti": Multiculturalism’s benefits come with integration struggles and stereotypes. On this tour we head deep into Kreuzberg to focus on Germany’s historical guest worker programs and their impact on Berlin’s current political and social climate.

Creative spaces: See famous squats as well as places where this endangered lifestyle is being transformed. We’ll discuss how these concepts evolved and what the future holds for them.

I've found Berlin a bit difficult - other cities I've been travelling to, it's easier to explore and get the hang of the place. Berlin, without some local knowledge, is really tricky. Enter this cycle tour! This cycle tour, with our host Walid, was a nice ride around the city for a few hours. We visited the Turkish Market, rode down the old runway at Tempelhof Park, had a lot of in depth discussions about gentrification and what the Cold War meant for Berlin. The ride also points out the tricky-to-find Tresor and Berghain, which is useful if you're into electronic music and want to go out for a dance during your stay. Walid was very friendly and informative. Definitely worth it!
