The bernese call their city Bärn. It is quite close to 'Bär' which means 'bear', isn't it? I think this explains everything. Some years ago the poor guys who since then had been living in a narrow concrete-hole called Bärengraben could move into the bear-park overlooking the river Aare and a part of the old town.

It is a peaceful place where you can sit besides the river and watch bears, city and water at the same time. The place is touristy, but somehow it is a 'must-do' and locals go there as well. I do not know any other place where you can observe bears for free and at every time of the day!
You may have to watch out for the bears quite well, they like to play hide-and-seek. In wintertime you probably won't see a bear as they're sleeping.
