When visiting a foreign city, one of the must-dos is to find somewhere with great panoramic views to take in all the beauty the place has to offer and, of course, to take some breathtaking photos to show off to your friends. Our fun-loving Athens local Manos recommends five of the best places in Athens where you can do just that.

1. Filopappou Climbing Site

Filopappou Hill is the perfect spot for anyone who’s into rock climbing. Experts have fixed all the necessary gear to the rocks, so it’s packed with climbers when the weather is good. It’s suitable for climbers of all levels, but if you feel climbing isn’t really your thing, you can just walk to the top instead and enjoy the amazing views.

2. Lofos Strefi

Strefi Hill is the highest point in the Exarhia neighbourhood. It’s a beautiful green space offering stunning city views. There’s a football field and a basketball court, and occasionally you can watch matches here. In summer, it’s known for its alternative open-air parties. To get here, follow Emmanouil Benaki Street upwards until you see the stairs that lead to the Hill.

3. Parnitha

Parnitha is one of the mountains surrounding the Attica basin. Hiking trails begin on all sides of this green heaven. If you feel like you need a break from the hustle and bustle of Athens, Parnitha is an ideal escape. You can even stay overnight in shelters set along the hiking trails – simply contact them in advance to book a bed. “Flabouri” is the most famous shelter in the area.

4. Penteli Observatory

The National Observatory of Athens is located about 18 kilometres outside the city centre. The main goal of the observatory is to share knowledge about astrophysics in an interesting and entertaining way. As a bonus, it conveniently sits on higher ground and offers breathtaking views of Athens.

5. Vrahakia

A hike up to Vrahakia on top of Aeropagus Hill is a great way to start your day. You can enjoy a coffee while enjoying spectacular views of Athens. If you’re an early bird, you might even catch the magical sunrise. From the other side of Vrahakia you can see the entrance to the Acropolis, which is just a few steps away.
