Tallinn locals usually prefer to steer clear of the restaurants in the Old Town unless they’re celebrating a special occasion. The restaurants in the Old Town are quite expensive and generally overpriced, and there’s almost nowhere to park. Even if you happen to find a spot, the hourly fee costs as much as a dessert at one of the overpriced restaurants. In recent years, however, one of the central streets of the Old Town – Rataskaevu Street – has turned into a hub of high-quality and reasonably priced restaurants. Be sure to stick to the places on this list if you wish to get the most for your money in Tallinn’s Old Town.

1. Aed – The Garden of pure food

Aed literally means “Garden” in Estonian. I guess it’s no wonder then that they strive to keep their food as organic and pure as possible. They have plenty of vegetarian and vegan options (including a vegetarian version of the daily special), as well as dishes made with high-quality meat. For those interested in modern Estonian cuisine, this place is sure to offer some fairly interesting experiences. It’s all the more surprising that the restaurant sports a very cool rustic-looking interior, making it ideal for long conversations over a glass (or several) of wine. Booking ahead is recommended!

2. Vegan Restaurant V

If you happen to be a carnivore, don’t be put off by the name – you honestly don’t need to be a vegetarian or vegan to love this place. Oftentimes you won’t even realise that their dishes are meatless, but even if you do, the flavour combinations are so artful that you won’t miss the taste of meat. This is the place to go to if you’re looking to discover new tastes, unexpected textures and creative combinations of ingredients. The best part: the most expensive item in their menu is €8! Again, booking ahead is strongly recommended!

3. Rataskaevu 16

Even though they haven’t been very creative with naming this place (the name is the address), they more than make up for it with exceptional service and an appetising menu. They let the local produce shine with their simple yet unique dishes. We also love their mouth-watering weekday lunch offers for just €5. This little place might not catch your attention when walking by, but it will surely surprise you once you step inside. Be sure to book a table as it’s quite busy.

All of these places fall into TripAdvisor’s top four restaurants in Tallinn. They’re literally located just steps away from each other, so you can always peek inside to check for free tables if you happen to be in the area.
