Bear Peak

Why locals love it

Though the ranges west of Boulder contain many summits dwarfing Bear Peak's 8,461 foot (2,579 meter) elevation, it is still the highest point visible from town and therefore ranks high on the checklist of nearly every local mountaineer. Hyper-competitive instincts aside, the views achieved of the surrounding area are unsurpassed.

Why you should visit it

With a commitment of about two hours of uphill hiking you can claim to have stood on the highest point within view of downtown Boulder. Also, from this vantage not only are the views of the city and even Denver spectacular, but so are those in the opposite direction of all the wilderness and mountains beyond.

Special tip

As always, be prepared with sunscreen, a map, water and perhaps a snack. A light can of beer also makes a great prize to urge you toward the summit.
