Sugarloaf Mountain gives you the picturesque scenery of the Colorado Front Range without the crowds of famous trailheads like Chautauqua or Mount Sanitas. When I want to get away from the city, Sugarloaf is the quiet respite I turn to. It's only a 20 minute drive (or a more challenging bike ride) from Downtown Boulder.
This easy-to-moderate hike takes you high above Boulder, providing views of Longs Peak to the west, rollng prairies to the east, and the lights of Denver to the south. The scars of past forest fires mark the landscape to make for jarring scenery changes along the landscape. There is no better place to watch the sunset while picnicking with friends.
Drive west up Boulder Canyon. Turn right on Sugarloaf Rd., and follow it about 4 miles. Watch for signs on your right. Trailhead is just a dirt lot.
