For an escape into the wilderness, residents of South Boulder are blessed with easy access to Chautauqua Park and the Flatirons trails. When in search of more civilized forms of outdoor recreation -tossing a frisbee, flying a kite, kicking around a soccer ball, riding a sled or hosting a large bbq for example- many turn instead to Tantra Park.
For a city the size of Boulder, Tantra Park is huge. A basketball court and full-size sports field connect to an unprogrammed field, a playground, a big grassy hill, a small sculpted pond, and yet another unprogrammed field. Further, the path continues into open prarie land, complete with another pond where people often take their dogs to swim.
Visitors do let their dogs run off the leash fairly regularly here, but most are well trained and very friendly, so try not to be intimidated.
