The plastic booths are most always cramped, servers wheel about hectically, the coffee is watery and the food thoroughly mediocre. So... why do people love this place? The answer is simple, but belies a more complex search for meaning and community: it has a hell of a lot character.
Most of the pig-tailed waitresses have been here for decades and know regular patrons by name. If you let on that it's your first visit, they'll initiate you with a painfully embarassing public announcement that a "Village Virgin" is present, followed by boistrous cheers from the crowd.
The "Village Virgin" ritual may make you blush, but when you return to join the regulars shaming the next rookie you'll feel like a true insider.
