Post-Communist Bratislava Tour

Insightful, off the beaten track journey in a legendary 1970-1990’s Czechoslovak Škoda car (up to 3 people) with our local guide to the most intriguing spots of the Cold War era Bratislava. (Please note by 4-7 people we use a regular modern minivan.)
Duration 2.5 hours
Private tour available in English
Group tour available in English
Group tour pricing from 163 EUR per person
I had a great time in Bratislava overall, but the highlight of my stay was the Post socialist tour with Authentic Slovakia. Together with a nice Dutch couple I spent two hours + in a Skoda from the 1970's with a very knowledgeable and humorous guide (Juro). He really could tie Slovakia's communist past to the present and took us to places we would never have visited on our own. With a bit more time in Bratislava I would also have taken the "Iron curtain" cycle tour. Authentic Slovakia makes ordinary guided tours look hollow and boring. Bjarne, Malmo. Sweden

Highlights

See the first prefabricated socialist apartment block in Czechoslovakia

Check out abandoned industrial buildings (a brewery and a textiles factory)

Explore the largest socialist housing project in Europe

Discover political buildings and structures from Soviet times

Ride under the controversial UFO-like SNP Bridge

See border fortifications built by the Czechoslovak government in the 1930s

Visit the Slovak-Austrian border – once part of the Iron Curtain

Description

Explore a vast concrete housing estate, the Soviet monument Slavín, post-industrial developments, the Iron Curtain border zone and loads of communist-era architecture. The tour brings alive the fascinating story of Bratislava in the turbulent 20th century.

What can you expect? Cool drive and quirky stops to see and understand:

- the first prefabricated apartment block in Slovakia as well as the largest socialist housing project, Petržalka
- communist-era architecture (inverted pyramid of Slovak Radio, rocket-shape TV tower Kamzík, Freedom Square)
- political objects: Soviet memorial Slavín, diplomatic 1970’s hotel, 1980’s parliament, villas of former communist leaders
- controversial ufo-like SNP bridge, causing destruction of the Jewish district
- former Iron Curtain area, border between communist Czechoslovakia and Austria

Please note that in some cases (winter conditions, car repairs etc.) we can not guarantee a classic Škoda car. In this case we go with a regular modern vehicle - car or van. No worries, we will communicate this with you before the tour :)

Note: if you are a group of 4-6 people and you wish to go by two old Škoda cars instead of a modern minivan, please book the tour as two separate bookings, i.e. e.g. by 5 people as a tour number 1 for 3 people and tour number 2 for 2 people. By a single booking for 4-7 people we go by a regular modern minivan.

Post Socialist city tour
We took the tour with Yuro and was a educational and interesting. He was fun, spoke very good English, and was very knowledgeable about the area and the history. We enjoyed his Skoda and his honest opinions! Really made the country more interesting!
Interesting recent history of Bratislava
I'd like to thank our guide Brano for taking me and two others around the post-Socialist parts of Bratislava in his grandfather's old Skoda. It was a two-hour "Post Socialist City Tour" but the tour was so interesting and we enjoyed listening to Brano's tales of living in the city so much that it ran a little over time ... and no one cared. When you have seen enough of the pretty old town and feel like learning about it's more recent history, join one of Authentic Slovakia's tours.
