Charleston House was the home of the Bloomsbury Set, a group of writers and artists from London that included Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell, and Duncan Grant among others. During WWI, Vanessa and Duncan moved to Lewes, near Brighton, and turned their house into a living canvas.

Charleston is worth a visit even for those unfamiliar with the Bloomsbury Set - the tour guides are knowledgeable, the house and its grounds are beautiful and eclectic, and the nearby barns have been renovated into an art gallery with temporary exhibitions.
Charleston can be tricky to get to via public transport, so careful planning is required if you're not driving
