A Taste of Transylvania: Bran Castle, Peleș Palace & Medieval Brasov

Three different eras. A king’s palace. A vampire’s castle. A Teutonic city. Leave busy Bucharest behind and cross the Carpathian Mountains on a private day trip that you won’t easily forget!
Duration 12 hours
Private tour available in English
Group tour pricing from 230 EUR per person
Me and a small group of friends went on this tour last month on a sunny Sunday morning – the perfect day to get away from Bucharest, admire the Transylvanian countryside and learn a bit more about Bran & Peles castles. Even though traffic was a bit hectic that weekend, our guide & driver kept us entertained with a lot of interesting facts about the history of the sites and the surroundings. Later during the day, he had a funny way of presenting Bran Castle, confronting facts with fiction and the figure of Vlad the Impaler with that of Dracula. The last stop of the day was in Brasov where, after seeing the fortifications and admiring the city from atop the White Tower, we stopped for dinner at a lovely traditional restaurant. It was a very nice day and I would highly recommend this tour!

Highlights

Visit Peleș Palace – the private retreat of the Romanian royal family

Discover Bran Castle also known as "home of Dracula"

Explore Brasov's medieval Old Town

Description

Leave busy Bucharest behind on a day trip that you won’t easily forget! First off, go royal! Step into the shoes of kings and queens, and explore Peleș Palace – the private retreat of Romania’s royal family.

The beautiful mountain scenery and elegant terraced gardens add even more charm to this majestic 19th-century palace. Inside, everything spells luxury: golden chandeliers, walnut carvings, marble fountains, secret chambers, and a royal armoury.

Next, you’ll go even further back in time to the late Middle Ages. Myths and legends swirl around the massive Bran Castle, a stone giant that has guarded the passage to Transylvania since the 14th century.

Count Dracula vs. Prince Vlad the Impaler. Facts vs. fiction. Explore the castle, its outdoor village museum, and the House of Horrors.

The tour’s grand finale? An epic medieval fantasy started by the Teutonic Knights during their first decades of existence. We’ll visit the city of Brasov, founded by the knights in 1211 on an old Dacian site. Dramatically overlooked by Mount Tampa, the city’s medieval core is a mix of narrow cobblestone streets, craft guilds, fortified towers, gatehouses, and inns.

A friend and I recently went to Romania for three days, one of which was spent on a tour of Transylvania with Unveil Romania. Our guides were Mihai and Olivia, the founders of Unveil Romania. Both made us feel like we were among friends and were able to give us a truly fantastic experience exploring Romanian culture. Would absolutely recommend!
