We recently visited Bucharest as part of a Viking River trip. We decided we would like to go to the Black Sea and Constanta. Andy was referred to us. A great choice. It was a long ride, about 2 1/2 hours. During the ride Andy was a wealth of information. He discussed the history, agriculture, people, wildlife, and so much more as we passed through each area. The time went so quickly. Although Constanta is undergoing large scale renovations, he knew how to make the best of the city. We rode the tram, walked the Black Sea Beach, walked the area of the Casino and had a wonderful lunch at Terasa Taraneasca. Being Easter Monday, the Art Museum was closed. On the way back to Bucharest he took the back roads and gave us insight to rural life and the cultures of the people who live there. Andy is a personable young man who really knows Romania. We would highly recommend using him.

Highlights

Description

This tour is a perfect blend of history, culture, sightseeing and relaxation.

We’ll depart Bucharest in the morning and drive east along the A2 motorway towards the Black Sea Coast. Once on the road, we’ll be treated to great views of the Wallachia flatlands and, if we’re lucky, catch a glimpse of the local wildlife. The surrounding lakes and forests are home to many species of birds and deer.

After crossing the Danube River via the Cernavodă Bridge, we’ll leave the Wallachia flatlands and enter the great hills of Dobrogea, finally arriving at the port city of Constanța. It’s the oldest (657 BC) and one of the biggest cities in Romania, and is the largest port on the Black Sea Coast.

We’ll visit Ovid Square, named after the famous Roman poet who was exiled to Constanța, as well as the Archaeology Museum and the Roman Mosaic Edifice where we’ll see some rare artefacts: a statue of the Glycon snake, ancient baby bottles and an original, ancient tomb.

Afterwards, we’ll visit the Mamaia beach resort and begin our journey back to Bucharest, arriving in the evening.

Andrei took us from Bucharest to Constanta and the Black Sea. He had excellent command of the region's history, politics, economics, and culture. He is THE best guide and I would definitely use him again - as we are thinking about a Black Sea cruise. The trip takes approximately 2-3 hours one way, but we were thrilled by his knowledge, his English, AND his personality!!
