Description

Bucharest – a city once called Little Paris, a city that could have been much more than that. You’ll easily see this for yourself during our Ashes of Communism tour, a tour that’s characterised by emotive visual contrasts.

You’ll visit two areas that perfectly depict the opposition of two eras: the massive communist Civic Centre – an empty shell admired mostly by foreign tourists, and the beautiful Old City with its Belle Époque perfume.

Walking around the Old City, you’ll be charmed by the gorgeous architecture of old palaces, byzantine churches, bohemian cafés and 19th-century houses. You’ll also learn that all of these historical treasures had to be restored or entirely rebuilt. Why? To hide the marks of bullets, to hide scars that have not yet healed even though almost three decades have passed since the fall of the regime and the bloody revolution.

The tour is much more than a visual experience – it’s a story that takes you through 45 years of communism, allowing you to see beyond Bucharest’s colourful present: Stalin and his monstrous enslavement, the genocide committed by the KGB secret police, the eradication of culture, private property and free press…

Behind Stalin’s Iron Curtain there was no good or evil, no black or white. Not even grey. Just red.

Good cultural tour
The Village Museum open air museum was really good and my guide was very knowledgeable. The timing was good as my tour beat the rush. It was busier at the end. The wine tasting was also really good. I sampled a few different wines with traditional snacks. Again my guide was bvery knowledgeable about the wines and the region that they came from. When the tasting was over, I asked my guide if he could drop me off at the nearby History Museum, which he did.
L
Carpathian off-road
Great customised private tour through the Carpathian mountains.

The trip included; off-roading through the mud, hiking through a valley next to a beautiful river, walking around gorgeous lakes, meeting locals sheepherders with their animals, snowball fight on top of a mountain, amazing views, exploring the caves and a great lunch!

We had two amazing tour guides that were super friendly, happy and were happy to answer any questions.

Great experience, definitely worth it to see the beauty of Romania!
A
Taste of Transylvania private tour
A friend and I recently went to Romania for three days, one of which was spent on a tour of Transylvania with Unveil Romania. Our guides were Mihai and Olivia, the founders of Unveil Romania. Both made us feel like we were among friends and were able to give us a truly fantastic experience exploring Romanian culture. Would absolutely recommend!
