Train from Budapest to Vienna

(3 answers)
By Paul Traveller September 23, 2018

My wife and I are arriving by air to Budapest Wednesday 10/31 around 13:00 and will take the train to Vienna. I notice that USA websites that sell train tickets in advance are very expensive ($136 USD). Can I we just buy the tickets at Keleti? Do train tickets for a specific train sell out? Thanks in advance. I've been to Budapest before on business and will return for 5 days: great city. We'll do day trips and also see the city.

There are a lot of trains and much less expensive in person, although perhaps the links below will be cheaper as well.
FlixBus operates a bus from Budapest Airport (BUD) to Vienna twice daily. Tickets cost 13€ - 22€ and the journey takes 3 h 25 min.
For trains, it will take a total of a little over 4 hours: the bus to Kalvin Ter Metro goes every 20 minutes and the metro to Kelenfold (much more reliable than Keleti) to Vienna, takes 2 hours and 26 minutes and goes every hour. Costs between 40 Euros and 65 Euros.

Thanks so much for the info. I never considered the bus. We'll see how much time we have when we arrive. I was in Budapest for business. We'll spend 5 days there after Vienna. Cheers!

Two of my favorite cities. I have lived 2 months in each and return every year for a visit. In fact am returning in November for 10 days--4 in Vienna and the rest Budapest!

Hi Paul!
I suggest you to buy the tickets in advance, because international trains are getting more expensive by time.
You can buy the tickets online on elvira.hu. One thing that is important: you cannot print these tickets at home but at the train station, so make sure you do not miss that.

Kriszti Thanks for the tip and I went to your link. Buying direct is much less expensive than the US websites. I was in Budapest on business many years ago. I'm excited for the food when we return from Vienna!

I understand that you are interested in Hungarian cuisine! If you need any help on this, let me know! I also provide walking tours for foreigners in the Great market hall and guides where to eat traditional dishes but still avoid touristic places. :)

Hi Paul!

Normally you can by tickets at the station. If the tickets sell out i do not know, but as 1st of November is holiday in whole Europe, it can happen.
You can book ticket and pickup or maybe try the website of the Austrian Railways who operates the most lines called RailJet between Budapest and Vienna.
