The largest in Europe and the fifth largest in the world, the Great Synagogue was built in 1854. It's architecture is in the Moorish Revival style, with decorations from Islamic models from Medieval Spain and North Africa. It also has a mixture of Byzantine, Romantic and Gothic elements. This is the temple that Judaism in Europe esteems highest.

The synagogue is not just a temple. It has not only the Great Synagogue but the Heroes' Temple, the graveyard, the Holocaust memorial and the Jewish Museum as well.
The frescoes and torah art are most interesting within the Great Synagogue.
