Thank you, Budapestflow, for the wonderful guided tour last week! I dropped by to Budapest for just 36 hours so we had a little mix of the Ruinpubs Tour and the Sunday Hang Over. After so many years of passing through the city I thought Budapest won't surprise me anymore, but - yes, indeed - for once I skipped all the boring must-sees and got a bitter-sweet taste of the best arty pubs, squat-ish bars, off-track markets, street art walls and design cafes. The guide, Atilla, is a great and funny storyteller who won't force me to speed up with taking pictures (even though I took way too many, but, hey, the old photo files from past Budapest tours are all loaded with the green bridge and the boring Parliament takes, so now I really couldn't stop picturing the colourful wall paintings and witty stickers and rainbow flags and funny steampunkish tinkered fantastic objects stacked in the lively Sunday market). These were the places I would generally hang out around if I lived in Budapest. And now I feel like I'll be coming back with my own arty stickers to put around. All best from Poland, you guys!

Description

Did you know that in Budapest’s ruin pubs you can…

…travel back in time with beer and wine?
…buy artwork and home-grown vegetables?
…understand the Hungarian soul?

Ruin pubs are the pulsating heart of Budapest, the gardens of creativity, the cultural hubs, the hidden hangouts of artists. They’re a combination of everything we love about our city, which you’ll surely love too!

Our tour is not to be confused with Budapest’s evening pub crawls. They’re nice and part of the bigger picture, but ruin pubs and gardens are much more than simply places to get fuzzy in the head and enjoy the city’s nightlife.

During the tour you’ll visit Budapest’s best ruin pubs, see local street art and murals, and visit several design shops and galleries.

My husband and i visiting from the US decided to do the tour with Attila called "Hangover tour" . The tour was nice and Attila was very knowledgable about the city. We visited some ruin pubs which i was very much looking forward to see. He explained their history very well. We also saw some spots as the locals do like bookstores, hang outs and have some yummy Hungarian dishes for lunch. Even though it was very cold, it was worth it to walk around the area, the Jewish quarter, the ruin pubs with a few stops to talk about interesting facts, city life, interesting information and see Budapest as the locals do.
We could not have been happier with Attila and this tour. For some reason we went into it thinking it was going to be a pub crawl of sorts (which none of us were up for since we'd spent plenty of time at the ruin pubs the evening before!). We were so happily surprised when it turned out to be a walking tour of the Jewish Quarter, learning about the history of the area and the ruin pubs, as well as getting to see all kinds of other local art, shops, restaurants, bakeries and hangouts. Attila was great to talk to, sharing about things non-related to the tour like the political atmosphere in Hungary, and taking us to a few unplanned stops when he got to know us a bit better. We revisited at least 5 of the places he took us afterwards, and were definitely places we never would've discovered on our own. Thank you Attila! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
