Shrine of Our Lady of Bonaria

Why locals love it

Bonaria has played a crucial role in the religious history of the island. Patron saint of seamen and Sardinia, its white façade in gothic-Catalan style stands out in Cagliari’s skyline, overlooking the bay that holds the same name. Main location of local celebrations, even the pope himself chooses Bonaria for his official visits.

Why you should visit it

We all have a flair for good stories, and the shrine of Bonaria has a very good one. The simulacrum of the Virgin Mary all signs will lead you to was found in a big wooden case (treasured just by the sacristy) after the shipwreck of a Catalan ship due to a violent storm. The terrible storm ceased as soon as the case had fallen into the water.

Special tip

Have a break on the flight of steps facing the sea: sit down and lose yourself into the blue.
