Thalassino Ageri (Permanently Closed)

Thalassino Ageri was a seafood taverna at Vivilaki 35 in the Tabakaria district of Chania on Crete, occupying a waterfront site among the stone shells of the town's nineteenth-century tanneries, away from the busier Venetian harbour. It opened in 1985 and built its reputation among Chania residents before becoming widely known to visitors. The menu was built on fresh fish and seafood, including salt-baked whole fish, grilled octopus, whitebait, squid, lobster with pasta and sea urchin salad, served on a terrace close enough to the water for spray to reach the tables in rough weather. It has now closed permanently. The Tabakaria district itself remains worth the walk from the old harbour, roughly twenty minutes east along the shore, for the tannery buildings themselves, several of which have been converted, and for the sea views back towards the Venetian lighthouse. Other seafood tavernas continue to trade along the Chania waterfront and in the Nea Chora district west of the harbour.
