In its city centre Cologne is home to Germany's most frequented pedestrian zones, Schildergasse and Hohe Strasse, where all the large chains and department stores, as well as smaller fashion studios and shops can be found.
You will also find many shopping opportunities along most of the big radial roads that go out from the city centre.
More unique designer boutiques seem to aggregate around certain roads or quarters. But each neighborhood really is worth scanning for its own treasures. Luckily distances in Cologne usually aren't very long.
Something unique about Cologne are its countless kiosks ("Büdchen"). Pretty much every block has one -some are more well sorted than others, and some are open more 24/7 than others. Here you can get anything you would want at a block's distance, including chilled alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, snacks, candy, and various convenience products such as condoms, pain killers, or toilet paper.
