On this tour, we take public transport (regional train from Copenhagen, approx. 45 minutes) to the most northern part of Zealand and visit Denmark's most iconic castle.
Kronborg dates back to the late 16th century and was once one of Europe's most famous castles. It was known for being hugely expensive and for its lavish over-the-top royal parties.
Shakespeare used it as inspiration for his most famous play, making it known today as "Hamlet's castle". For the Danes however, it's more famous as a resting place for our most iconic Viking hero, Holger Danske.
We will explore the castle together, where you will hear about the unique love story of the king who built it, learn how the soldiers lived in the chilling casemates and see the magnificent ballroom where Shakespeare let his Hamlet die so tragically.
We will also walk the ramparts and say hello to Sweden right on the other side of the water, and you will learn why Kronborg was built and how it was the source of Denmark's wealth for over 400 years.
If time allows it, we will visit picturesque Elsinore with its cute old houses, perhaps stop for an ice cream or lunch.
