Castle on the rocks
Why locals love it
Majestic Edinburgh castle sits on the top of the Royal Mile, built on an extinct volcanoe. It sums up everything which means to be Scottish: the Stone of Destiny, the crown jewels, the National War Memorial and it is also the home of the famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo in every August. Visit for scenic views over the whole city.
Why you should visit it
Edinburgh castle would be hard to miss from your 'things-to-do' list as it is dominating the city skyline. If you are put off by the high entry fee, but want to save and visit other castles in Scotland, consider buying the Historic Scotland Explorer Pass. It is a great value ticket and allows you to skip the queues.
It's a real challenge to take a picture of the famous 1 o'clock gunshot. Are you able to stay still?
