Why locals love it

Hermitage of Braid is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the Scottish capital. This 130-acre natural reserve is actually located in the city, but it's so calm and quiet that it feels to be miles away. With its central location it is a favourite spot of families, dog walkers, runners, cyclists and wildlife lovers.

Why you should visit it

Have a peaceful walk in the valley of the Braid Burn river and enjoy nature - in the middle of the Scottish capital. The Hermitage of Braid is an excellent place for nature walks with mixed woodland, grassland and marshland paths and a great opportunity to see local wildlife.

Special tip

Listen carefully to hear the woodpeckers and don't be surprised to see a fox hunting for its bunny dinner.

A lovely walk from Braid Road to Liberton following the Braid Burn as it flows though the gorge carved by the last ice age. One of the mills that once stod in the valley produced the paper for the oldest documents in Register House .It also has a very fine DooCot [Pigeon House]
