Hi Keith. The close doesn’t exist anymore, or at least not under that name. It is now called Barrie’s Close and it connects Parliament Square with Old Fishmarket Close. It’s had many names over the years and was called Hangman’s Close at one time as the city’s hangman used to live there.

Thanks Graham. I'm an old Edinburgh boy and it was annoying me. If it had been a pub I would have known it.

Stay safe and well.
Hi Keith, there are many close’s Of both sides of the full length of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile but I don’t recall seeing a Hangman’s Close. It could be fictitious name in the book you see reading. There are many parts of the Royal Mile and Grassmarket that show references to hangings that once took place. Also the killing of witches too.
