Why locals love it

The Canny Man's is not a usual Scottish booze stop. With its crazy decor, bizarre collection of stuffed animals and other eccentric items, this place is either love or hate. Most locals vote for love and they are regular visitors of this Morningside institution. Great ales, whiskies and some vintage port too.

Why you should visit it

It's a truly historic pub, open since 1871. Try not to lose your confidence reading the sign outside the pub: 'no smoking. no credit cards. no mobile phones. no cameras. no backpackers'. Indeed there is strict door selection, but if you get in (as I did), you can expect a truly unique experience. Dress smart casual.

Special tip

The place specialises in open sandwiches called smorrebrod.

You either love it or hate it and the 'Management' will also make the same decision about you as you walk through the door and ask you to leave before you open your mouth and try to order some food or drink. But if you do fit the 'Client Criteria' for that day and are aloud to stay the food & drink is quite good, be it a bit pricey, in this very quirky bar that has been owned and run by the rather eccentric Kerr family for almost 200 years.
