Why locals love it
Äkässaivo Canyon Lake is a canyon lake with rocky walls consumed by glacial rivers, and a shingle adjoining the brook are located 10 kilometers north of Äkäslompolo along the Äkäsjoki River. At the sight there is also Seita, that surprises with its size: a 10-meter-wide cliff top is 30 meters high. The sight is an ancient sacrificial place.
Why you should visit it
The steep-walled Äkässaivo and the huge Seitapahta on its shores are sacred places for the Sami. Sights in Muonio can be explored along the nature trail, Saivonkierros, which tells about the nature and history of the area. If visited remember to be respectful, some Seita places are still sacrite for Sámi, they should be respected.
