In the Medieval Finland, the oldest institution of Espoo concentrated close to the Espoonjoki Valley and the Glimsinjoki Valley. The winter road passed the church in winters and from the historical "Kuninkaantie" travelled through between Morby and Lövkulla to the church. The church was maybe one of the nightstay for the weary travellers.
There are three major construction stages of Espoo Cathedral. The oldest parts of the church, such as the preserved roof deck structures, have been build in the late 15th century. The Church's extension into a Cross Church began in 1821 under the guidance of architect Pehr Granstedt. There were also two major restorations in 1929-31 and 1982.
