The defense of the Helsinki fortress was based on the infantry and the strong artillery supporting it. The bases consist of battle stations and artillery batteries with ammunition depots. Specially the connecting roads connecting the fortifications, the cannon roads, along which troops and heavy equipment could be moved during the battles.
The roads were made of macadamia (crushed stone) and cobblestones and were accurately drained. Also note the massive terracing on the steep slope. A hundred-year-old cannon road suddenly takes its walkers from the edge of the settlement to the middle of the Mäkkylä's wilderness.
