It's one of the few remaining artisan workshops for silk manufacturing—not just in Florence, but in the whole world. It celebrates a longstanding Florentine art: silk weaving was important to fourteenth-century Florence for the trade opportunities, wealth and reputation it helped give the city.
This place has been operating from its current location continuously since 1786—and before then, silk weaving was still an important part of the economy, serving as the principal source of wealth for many major Florentine families. Get some perspective on this in your visit (which must be arranged in advance).
